Telling People to Take a Hike Since 1998
Walking is something I enjoy. If given the opportunity, I will walk anywhere, anytime. But I have a special affinity for walking on trails in the mountains. I adore the sound of mountain streams and wind through the trees, the beauty of alpine wildflowers and mountain lakes. I see beauty in meandering trails through the forest, and even in the trails themselves. When I am hiking across the tundra, I feel like I could walk forever.
In the late 90’s, my wife and I moved back to Estes Park with our two children, working as resident managers of a local lodge. We would often be asked by our guests, “What’s a good trail to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park?” It was a favorite question. |
How it began
At that time, there was only one hiking guide book available for Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), a very good one and very complete, a little too complete for someone visiting for just a few days. So in 1998, I designed a pocket-sized book of 24 trails of all types, which I had printed at a local print shop and began to wholesale around town. It sold for $4.95, and still does. Over 100,00 have sold. |

In the years after, I continued hiking and photographing the many gorgeous trails of RMNP and accumulated a good collection. In 2014, I created a website, called rockymountaindayhikes.com with about 60 trails listed. That trail list has grown 79 hikes, from short trails to challenging hikes, with photo galleries, trail profiles and maps, giving visitors to RMNP a complete and diverse list of hikes to choose from. The site also provides RMNP information and updates, trail specific weather forecasts, a wildflower guide, videos and articles, and much more, becoming a comprehensive website on Rocky Mountain National Park with over 41k page views in the last year. |
Hike Rocky Magazine
In 2021, I started publishing Hike Rocky magazine, a free, annual print publication, along with a monthly e-newsletter, both being a resource for visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park. 60,000 copies of the printed magazine are currently being distributed annually to over 150 locations in and around the Estes Valley, providing trail information with QR code links to the website, maps, and informative articles. The monthly e-newsletter offers the 500+ subscribers with seasonal trail information, stories and adventure articles, science research and other current issues happening in Rocky Mountain National Park. |
The Hike Rocky Free Annual Print Magazine has quickly become the go-to visitor guide for all things Rocky Mountain National Park. The web Trail Guide for RMNP along with the Hike Rocky archives of articles make rockymountaindayhikes.com the most comprehensive website solely focused on Rocky Mountain National Park.
